“When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young.” — Maya Angelou
When endeavoring to a create a space for women of color to breathe easy, making sense of ourselves in the world is one way we do that. It’s a seminal and shall I say enjoyable, rigorous process in learning to be well women — to fully see and engage ourselves. And, we agree with Mama Angelou that books are a reverential tool in that process. Both literature and other genres help us remember we are not alone, that our strive for succeeding internally as well as externally is not in vain. It’s one reason we’re so excited to announce Black Girl In Om is kicking off our first ever BGIO Book Club October 1, 2017 with celebrity wellness and lifestyle guru Latham Thomas’ new book Own Your Glow: A Soulful Guide for Luminous Living and Crowning the Queen Within!
In our first book club choice, Latham Thomas resuscitates the feminine power in each of us. Today, it’s so easy to be on auto-pilot, but Latham lovingly moves us out of it. Own Your Glow is packed with rituals, meditations, and snackable lifestyle tips, as the wellness maven provides a clear framework for harnessing our passion, developing spiritual fitness, and embracing true vulnerability. This guide not only helps our personal lives transform, but ushers us to create positive change in our world. Combining spiritual, psychological and self-reflective tools, Latham offers an antidote to the hustle-hard, make-it-happen mainstream culture and fosters slowing down, intentionality and self-care as a pathway to empowerment.
From the playful pause to prioritizing with passion Latham is the sister that gently nudges us all to our brightest glow. Some of your favorites such as Luvvie Ajayi, Rebecca Walker, Lisa Price, June Ambrose and Mara Brok Akil to name a few agree that Own Your Glow is a transformational read!
Throughout the month of October, we’ll be reading with you and our tribe, sharing insights and discussions across social media, in conversation with Latham on the BGIO podcast and online publication ... as well as looking to publish your reflections as well!
